Square Foot Garden: Mixing Soil and Planting

Day 2:  Making "Mel's Mix" and beginning to plant

1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 blended compost - mix with a tarp

We mixed the soil in two 15 cubic feet batches to make a total of 30 cubic feet of soil.  After mixing the soil we filled the beds.  Due to the location of my raised beds, a wheelbarrow wouldn't work, so we used 5 gallon buckets instead.  The soil is very light-weight when dry, so this was pretty easy to do.

After mixing and adding the soil the next step was to add the wood lath to mark the "square feet" in the garden.

The best part --  adding my plants!  I am doing a variety of plants, some from seeded transplants and some directly from seed.  The first few plants are all transplants.  I will plant seeds later this week.

After all of the hard work I "celebrated" by letting my daughter release some ladybugs into the garden.  Her special name for these lovely and very helpful insects is "Labdydebugs"- Love!
